The Factions
In the world of Warlord seven factions vie for power - or simply fight for their own survival.
- Deverenians - noble knights and dark sorcerors worshipping an evil deity called 'The Storm'
- Dwarves - over centuries defended the Accordlands against the fiends of the Abyss, finally lost the battle and have been driven into exile
- Free Kingdoms - fought for their independence from Deverenia but finally only for survival against the Elves and Nothrog as well
- Elves - cursed with a geas these short-lived elves turned their magic powers to evil and necromancy to extend their lives and exact revenge
- Nothrog - the powerful and organized descendants of wild orcs, hobgoblins and giants these are Warlord's masters of war and the only ones who have mastered Siege engines
- The Chosen - Powerful Wizards and Daemons who had mostly conquered all the lands of Thessyria when the scattered Accordlands armies appeared through gates in their rear
- Mercenaries - a catch-all for true Mercenaries like Kerebrus' Dark Horsemen as well as Monsters, Dragons, and unaligned heroes.
Origins
Warlord Card Game
Originally published 2001 by Alderac Entertainment Group, makers of fan-favorites like Legends of the Five Rings, 7th Sea, or Doomtown, Warlord has been the second-longest running fantasy collectible (or customizable as it is now) card game. It enjoyed 2 resets and over 20 expansion sets. In 2008 the format as a booster-based collectible card game did not sustain anymore in face of the world-wide economic crisis and Alderac's president John Zinser licensed the game to PHOENIX Interactive based in Germany, where the 4th edition of Warlord now is published by two long-time fans of the game.
